Cortona

Cortona, one of the oldest cities in Europe, has hardly changed since the 18th century.  Still partly enclosed within its solid Etruscan walls and gates, the city has a panoramic view over the wide and fertile plains of the Val di Chiana.  On the horizon are the Siena mountains and beneath its feet in the valley floor lies Lake Trasimeno, scene of Hannibal’s successful battle against the Roman legions.  Within the city are some of the most incomparable architectural and artistic treasures of the world’s patrimony, waiting to be discovered. Wander its ancient streets, admire the medieval and renaissance palaces, the roman, gothic and renaissance churches, the museums and art galleries.
Outside
the city walls there are many other artistic and historical treasures to be found:  Etruscan tombs, the enchanting Le Celle monastery founded by St. Francis of
Assisi, the 11th century roman church of San Archangelo, the remains of Farneta Abbey ……  All surrounded by the vineyards, olive groves, hills, forests, villages and hamlets of the beautiful Cortonese countryside.
